On most HP laptops running Windows, press Windows + Shift + S to capture part of the screen. Press Windows + PrtSc to save a full screen PNG to Pictures > Screenshots. On an HP Chromebook, press the Screenshot key, or Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. If nothing happens, check Fn Lock.
Let me be straight with you.
Nobody wants to photograph their HP laptop screen with a phone. It's blurry. It's awkward. And you don't need to.
Every HP laptop and HP desktop can capture the screen in about two seconds. You just need the right keyboard shortcut for the job.
Different jobs need different shortcuts. Grabbing an error message is nothing like cropping one button for a tutorial. I like to decide with two questions: do you want a saved file or just a clipboard copy, and do you need the whole screen or a piece of it? The short version below follows what HP documents in its official guide and Google's Chromebook help.
Windows + PrtSc captures the full screen and saves it automatically to Pictures > Screenshots, so it suits quick captures. Windows + Shift + S captures only the area you select and opens it in the Snipping Tool editor, so it suits cropping and annotating. PrtSc alone copies the full screen to the clipboard, which works well when you plan to paste into a document. Alt + PrtSc copies just the active window to the clipboard for clean, window only shots. Fn combinations and the camera key vary by model, and they matter on keyboards that need the Fn key. On an HP Chromebook, the Screenshot key offers full, partial and window captures, saved to Downloads and copied to the clipboard.
This one is my default recommendation. It's the closest thing to a one step full screen screenshot. You press two keys, the screen dims for a blink, and a file appears in a folder. There's no pasting and no saving. It's perfect for grabbing error messages or collecting images for a tutorial. Here's how it works.
That's the save location HP lists for this shortcut. Simple.
If you only learn one method, make it this one. The Snipping Tool lets you capture exactly the part you need, then crop, annotate and share it. Microsoft built it into Windows, so there's nothing to install. Microsoft's Snipping Tool guide lists three ways to open it: search the Start menu, press Windows + Shift + S, or press Print Screen.
Need motion instead of a still? Per the same Microsoft page, press Windows + Shift + R for a video snip.
Sometimes you don't want your cluttered desktop in the picture. Alt + PrtSc captures only the window you're using, which keeps your screen capture tidy. The trade off is that it copies to the clipboard instead of saving a file, so you need to paste it somewhere. It takes about ten seconds.
Here's where HP laptops get quirky. On some models, PrtSc only works while you hold Fn. HP also notes that some keyboards have a camera icon on a function key, often F12.
Try these in order:
Still nothing? Check whether Fn Lock is on. It changes how your function row behaves.
Running Chrome OS instead of Windows? The keys are different, and honestly the process is easier. Google says to press the Screenshot key, or Shift + Ctrl + Show windows if your keyboard doesn't have one. With an external keyboard that lacks a Show windows key, use Ctrl + Shift + F5.
Then choose full screen, partial or window from the menu at the bottom. Captures go to your Downloads folder by default and are also copied to your clipboard.
Capturing the image is only half the job. Most screenshots need a quick cleanup before they're ready for a blog post, a support ticket or a team chat. You might crop the edges, blur private details, or send a link instead of a heavy file. Here's how I'd handle the next step, using tools already covered on this site so you don't have to hunt around.

Don't panic. It's usually a setting, not a broken key. Run through these fixes in order, from easiest to most involved. HP itself suggests the driver and restart steps. If one fails, just move to the next.
Number five is my safety net. It doesn't depend on the Print Screen key at all.
Ever taken a screenshot and then lost it? Everyone has. The save location depends on the method, and knowing it saves you a frustrating hunt.
Windows + PrtSc saves to Pictures > Screenshots. PrtSc and Alt + PrtSc stay on the clipboard until you paste. The Snipping Tool saves wherever you choose. On a Chromebook, files go to Downloads.
Tip: make a dedicated folder and rename files as you go. Future you will be grateful.
Here are the questions people ask most about HP screenshots. The answers are short on purpose, so you can scan them quickly.
Press Windows + PrtSc to save a full screen image to Pictures > Screenshots. For a custom area, press Windows + Shift + S.
Press Windows + Shift + S. It doesn't use the PrtSc key. You can also open the Snipping Tool from the Start menu, or try Fn + PrtSc.
Windows + PrtSc saves to Pictures > Screenshots. PrtSc and Alt + PrtSc copy to the clipboard. On a Chromebook, files go to Downloads.
Press the Screenshot key, or Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, then choose full screen, partial or window.
Check Fn Lock, restart, and update your keyboard drivers. If it still fails, use Windows + Shift + S.
Okay, time for some honesty. If you create tutorials, run a blog or document bugs at work, you'll take screenshots constantly. A laptop that makes this clumsy costs you minutes every day.
HP laptops run Windows with the built in Snipping Tool, which includes annotation and screen recording. There's no extra software and no subscription. Many models also give you a dedicated Print Screen key, and HP's support library covers exactly these questions.
If your current machine makes this harder than it should be, browse HP's laptop lineup. Pick one with a full keyboard and a sharp display. You'll capture faster, edit smarter and stop fighting your own computer.
You now have five methods for capturing your HP screen, from the instant Windows + PrtSc to the precise Snipping Tool and the Chromebook shortcuts. Start with Windows + Shift + S. It handles almost everything.
