The ChatGPT image generator is OpenAI's built in AI image generator. You describe a picture in plain English, and it creates or edits it inside ChatGPT. The current version is ChatGPT Images 2.5, launched September 8, 2026, and it is available on all ChatGPT tiers. Free users get a small daily allowance, and paid plans get more.
Here is the thing.
I have tested a lot of image tools, and this is the one I open first. Let me show you why, and how you can get great results fast.
If you want a wider view of how these tools help marketers, my guide on why AI photo generators are changing digital marketing is a good companion read.
Think of it as a designer who lives inside your chat window.
You type a text prompt. It draws. Then you say "make the sky darker," and it edits only that part. It is a native GPT Image model, the successor to DALL·E, not a separate app.
And it is popular. OpenAI says people make more than 3 billion images a week across ChatGPT and the API.

Short version: faster, sharper and better at edits.
Images 2.0 fixed the old text rendering problem and added thinking abilities, like searching the web before generating. Images 2.5 builds on that.
It takes about two minutes.

Honestly, it depends on the job.

These roles come from Blend's comparison and Will Francis's 2026 roundup. Zapier's Midjourney vs. ChatGPT review agrees on the broad picture.
I stay with ChatGPT because writing, brainstorming and images live in one place.
Partly.
Image generation is available on every tier. But free limits are small, and OpenAI does not publish exact numbers. Third party reports put the free plan at roughly 2 to 3 images per rolling 24 hours and Plus at around 50 per three hours. Treat those as estimates and check OpenAI's pricing page.
One more thing: a free ChatGPT account does not give you API access. Developers pay per image through the OpenAI API, and OpenAI notes you may need API Organization Verification first.
It is generally fine, but you should be careful.
OpenAI says Images 2.5 uses prompt and image checks, plus C2PA metadata and invisible watermarking. You can read more in the content provenance docs. However, C2PA data can be stripped by a screenshot.
My advice? Read OpenAI's current terms before commercial use. Disclose AI made visuals to your readers. I am not a lawyer, so check with one if the stakes are high.
Here is where I will be straight with you.
If you publish regularly, the free limit will slow you down. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month and gives you much higher image limits and faster, more advanced outputs.
What you actually get:
Compare that with a single custom designer graphic. One saved commission can cover months of Plus. If you create content weekly, I would upgrade today.
ChatGPT uses ChatGPT Images 2.5, released September 8, 2026, per OpenAI's announcement.
Yes, with limits. Free users get a small daily allowance, and exact numbers are not officially published.
Much better than before. Images 2.0 made text rendering a headline feature, and 2.5 builds on it.
They are the two API models. Flare favors speed, and Sunburst favors editing precision.
Yes. Upload it and describe the change, or use Sketch to draw what you want.
For text and conversational edits, often yes. For painterly, atmospheric art, many people still prefer Midjourney.
So, to sum up.
The ChatGPT image generator is fast, flexible and genuinely useful for blog images, social media graphics and marketing assets. It is not perfect, and free limits are tight. But for most creators, the value is obvious.
Open ChatGPT, run your first prompt, and see for yourself. When you hit the free cap, upgrade to Plus and keep creating.
